Free time

Free time is the time available to people outside of obligatory activities such as school, housework or employment. Children and young people today have more free time than previous generations. Leisure activities are especially important during adolescence, where they often play a key role: for example, in structuring adolescents’ later life transitions, social identities, and youth cultures (Young people and leisure, 2013). Recent studies on leisure discuss the increasing consumption and digitalization in young people’s leisure time.

In our projects, we look at which leisure activities young people engage in and what role age, gender, or origin can play. In addition to traditional leisure activities such as music, sports and meeting friends, digital media are playing an increasingly important role.
